Home Sweet Home
Our household plumbing is one of the most important features of our home, yet often it is one of the most neglected. We are so accustomed to having immediate access to clean, running water that our lives can be turned completely upside down when we have a plumbing malfunction that forces us to go without running water for any period of time.
Here are a few tips to help keep your water flowing and what to do in case of a plumbing emergency:
– Leaks: Besides being pesky, they can lead to high water bills and potential property damage. Make sure any detected leaks are repaired immediately. If you are not skilled in fixing minor leaks, your plumbing services professional will be happy to take care of the problem for you. Pay close attention to your water bill. Any unusual spike in your bill could point to an undetected leak. Such undetected leaks could be causing damage to your home and should be addressed immediately.
– Winter Weather Issues: Winter weather and colder temperatures can be a major source of plumbing issues. To help your plumbing survive harsh winter conditions, consider these factors :
– Outdoor Faucets: Make sure outdoor faucets are turned off and any hoses are disconnected. Many plumbing systems are equipped with an inside shut off valve with a bleeder cap that allows excess water to be drained from the pipe leading to the outside. If your system has this feature, be sure to take advantage of it. Draining all the water out of the pipe between the indoor shut off valve and the outside will minimize the chances of frozen and cracked pipes.
– Insulation: Even indoor pipes that are potentially exposed to sub-freezing temperatures can freeze and burst. Check the opening where your water pipes enter your home. If the opening is not tightly sealed, insulating foam will take care of blocking cold air coming in from the outside. In addition, wrapping exposed pipes with insulation will help protect them from the effects of cold temperatures. If your pipes are exposed to extremely cold temperatures, it may be advisable to add a heat cable in addition to the insulation.
– Cabinet Doors: While many of us don’t think about it, your cabinet doors can block the heat from your house from fully entering the area under your sink. During times of extremely low outdoor temperatures, open the cabinet doors under your sink. That will allow more warm air to reach the pipes. Also consider turning on your faucet to allow water to trickle through. That will keep water from sitting in the pipes and potentially freezing.
– Main Shut Off Valve: Make sure you know where the main shut off valve is in your home. In the event of a major plumbing emergency turning off the supply of water to your home can prevent a substantial amount of damage and expense.
– While You Are Out of Town: Any time you leave your home for an extended period of time, consider turning off the water to your home. Nothing ruins fond vacation memories more than returning to your home to discover a major water disaster. If you have an ice maker in your freezer, turn that off also to prevent damage to the ice maker when the water supply is turned off.
These are just a few tips that we hope will help keep your plumbing operating smoothly. Should you need any routine or emergency plumbing assistance, your professionals at Solutions Mechanical and Plumbing are trained and ready to help.
