Servicing Your Furnace

Servicing Your Furnace

When the crisp fall air sets in we know colder winter weather can’t be far behind.  Many of us even think to ourselves; “I wonder when I’ll need to turn my heat on for the first time this winter.”  What you should never have to wonder is whether or not your heat will come on when you turn your  home’s thermostat to “Heat” for the first time. Unfortunately, a lot of folks will be unpleasantly surprised when they flip that thermostat to heat.  If you are having your heating system serviced each fall prior to the heating season, you won’t be one of those who are unpleasantly surprised.

Here are just a few of the issues you can avoid by having your heating system serviced each fall:

 – Illness: If you have a heating system that burns gas, propane or oil, annual service is an absolute must. Your heating system professional will carefully check to make sure all of the components of your system that prevent carbon monoxide from entering your home are working properly and are in good repair.

Air quality Problems:  When dust and debris builds up in your system because it isn’t properly maintained, your furnace filter will become clogged with dirt and even mold. And odds are, if you aren’t having your system maintained annually, your filter is probably a mess.  That means air is being forced into your home that can be potentially toxic.  And if you aren’t regularly replacing the filters in your returns, your air quality will be even worse.

Heating System Failure: Without fall maintenance your heat may come on just fine when you turn it on for the first time.  But, by having your heating system serviced each fall, your heating professional will be able to detect any problems and get them repaired so that your heating system will come on not only the first time, but every time.

Higher Energy Bills: When your heating system hasn’t been properly maintained, it is likely that it won’t be operating efficiently. That means that it not only won’t heat as well but it will also take more energy to generate the heat it does provide.  More energy means higher bills.  In this case your annual maintenance becomes an investment and not an expense.

Premature Need for Heating System Replacement:  Failure to properly maintain your heating system will almost guarantee its lifespan will be shortened by a number of years.  Most systems have a 15 to 20 year lifespan and cost much more to replace than you will invest in annual maintenance.  In addition, most manufacturers require annual maintenance to keep your warranty intact. Again, annual maintenance is an investment in keeping your system running at peak efficiency for many years to come.

The purpose of your heating system is to provide you with warmth and comfort, not headaches, sickness and higher than necessary energy bills.  We hope that this information will help you appreciate the value and importance of having your heating system serviced every fall.
