How to Plan a Kitchen Renovation

When it comes to home remodeling projects, kitchens lead the list.  If a kitchen remodel is on your priority list, here are a few things to consider before jumping in.

Plan Your Budget:  Before you do anything else, determine how much money you can realistically devote to remodeling your kitchen and stick to it.  Experts recommend that you plan to spend 10 to 20 percent less than your budget to allow for unexpected expenses.

Do Some Research:  In an August 2019 article that appeared on The Spruce website written by Lauren Flanagan entitled “The Ultimate Kitchen Remodeling Guide, Flanagan suggests “Visit kitchen showrooms and home stores to figure out the cost of items, and then figure out what you need and what you can afford. Attending a neighborhood home tour is a great way to connect with other homeowners and observe their kitchen layouts and renovations.”

Design Around Your Lifestyle: It is important to be clear on how you use your kitchen and then plan your remodel around that.  A beautiful kitchen that does not fit your lifestyle will soon lose its appeal. Of course, you want your kitchen to be beautiful, but it must first be functional.

Determine What You Really Need:  Don’t burn up your budget with add-ons before you determine what you really, really need.  Once you’ve determined what you absolutely need then you can think about “nice to have” add-ons if there is still room in your budget for those items.

Hire A Kitchen Designer: It is well worth the investment to hire a kitchen designer.  A kitchen designer will be able to walk you through the process to make sure the finished design will fit your lifestyle.  They will also be able to help you determine if what you want will fit within your budget.  Finally, once the design is finished, your kitchen designer can hand off your design to your contractor with full confidence that your contractor will have all the information he or she needs to build the kitchen of your dreams.

These tips should help get you started on planning your kitchen renovation.  The three articles referenced below will also provide more comprehensive information you can use once you’ve decided to move forward with your renovation project. Happy remodeling!!
